gifted from REROLL YOUR SOUNDTRACK
been a while, hasn't it?
I've mostly been pre-occupied with other things these past... oh, 2 months. Time flies when you're not keeping promises, I guess.
Anyway! I've been playing a lot of The Binding Of Isaac recently (what with the recent Repentance+ DLC with online mode and all that), and a decent bit ago I ran into this little alternate soundtrack called REROLL YOUR SOUNDTRACK (you can listen to it here). Mostly, I was just looking for some new experiences-- I'm not the biggest fan of Rebirth's default soundtrack (like at all), and I had listened to Antibirth's and Flash's music for a while. I figured I needed something new (that and I was testing out the Soundtrack Menu Mod, which lets you download different soundtracks and swap between them on the fly). and let me tell you:
THIS.
SOUNDTRACK.
KICKS.
ASS.
oh it's so perfect. You're listening to one of my favorite tracks right now, by the way. This plays in the Angel Room and it's so damn calming.
I digress. This soundtrack perfectly hits what the Rebirth soundtrack would be like if it wasn't just focused on ambiance and nothing else. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good tracks that came out of Repentance (specifically the theme for Downpour, Dogma, and the entire Beast fight), but to me, RYS blows it out of the water. The entire UST is a lot more crunchy, a lot more focused on distorted and bitcrushed sound effects, and I love it for that. On top of that, everything just fits. It's little details, like the samples of Mom's voice in the fight against Mom's foot, the larger presence of major chords (I think?) in the boss fight against Isaac and the Beast, the unbridled chaos of Delirium's boss theme, or even just the melancholy of the Dark Room or the Blue Womb. I love the fact that Dogma's vocals are instead targeted DIRECTLY towards Isaac, it puts a personal twist on the rampant evangelism of the vocals, and may seem like something Isaac would think of as he spirals before his death. More than anything, there's just not a song that I don't dislike. Every track feels varied in its own special way. With the default soundtrack you do have your stinkers-- the tracks for Chapter 4 (The Womb) come to mind specifically. Flash's music can feel a little same-y at times, and some of the tracks in Antibirth are just kinda missing that OOMPH that RYS has. All in all, I stumbled into this mod with little expectations-- I see a workshop mod that puts their own spin on the soundtrack, and I don't immediately know if it's gonna be good. But man. Man, oh MAN, is this soundtrack good.
But anyway, yeah. Not much to this one. I was planning on making a review of most of the Isaac soundtracks on the workshop, sort of as an excuse to gush about RYS and criticize the default soundtrack, but idk. Maybe not today.
